I haven't updated this much, busy busy mommy!
I want to share what DP has learned this year in homeschooling:
We started in mid October and he basically had no concept of reading. He barely knew the sounds the letter made, let alone how to sound a word out. We read often, but I had no idea he was so far behind. When we began homeschooling I found this out VERY quickly. We restarted COMPLETELY! Went through the basics- ABC's and the sounds they make. I found songs to make it fun and he caught on. Now, 2 months later, he is reading 3 and 4 letter words, and can read small story books with very very little help. We use sight words (words he just needs to see and know what they are), and have vocabulary words (words he needs to know how to spell out loud for me). His confidence has grown SO much. In only 2 months...I'm so proud.
He is really really really good at math. He learned to count to 100 normally (couldn't do this when he first came out of that school) then we worked on counting by 2's, 5's, 10's and 100's (skip counting). We did basic addition (1+1=2), basic subtraction (2-1=1), and he caught onto that quickly. It became very boring for him because he could do it quickly, so he began making careless mistakes. We then moved onto larger numbers (11+10= and 11-10= stuff) and that helped because he had to work at it.
His handwriting has improved DRAMATICALLY. It was downright chicken scratch before, but now you can see he is forming his own way of writing. Its backwards still sometimes, but we are working on that.
He loves doing science experiments, so Santa got him a book with TONS in it. We are going to be doing them through the year. He's going to love love love it!
I started giving him some Spanish words through the week. He doesn't have to memorize them, just exposing him to them is beneficial at this age.
Wrestling started early this month, and he thinks it's just awesome! He is getting more active, and getting stronger! His confidence has grown because he has lost 15 lbs since coming out of that school. He used to complain about being "chubby" and that broke my heart. Since we are monitoring what he eats more, and how much working out he does, he has slimmed up a bunch and isn't worried about being chubby anymore :)
I am so excited to start 2013 out! We are going to have so much fun, and he will have a great heads up! I'm sorry we didn't start homeschooling earlier, but I'm glad we caught it early.
HELLO 2013!!
